If you have spent any time in fitness corners of the internet, you have heard the claim: creatine causes hair loss. It gets repeated in YouTube thumbnails, in comment threads, and by influencers who should know better. In our dataset it shows up across dozens of videos and millions of views.
This is the kind of claim Panacea Index was built to interrogate. Not to declare it true or false from a podium, but to show where it came from, what the studies actually found, and how much confidence any of it deserves. Here is the file.
The entire "creatine causes hair loss" story traces back to a single 2009 study: a 3-week trial in college rugby players that found creatine supplementation increased levels of DHT, a hormone linked to pattern hair loss. That is the whole origin. One study, in one population, measuring a proxy for hair loss, not hair loss itself.
Everything downstream — the thumbnails, the confident assertions, the "creatine will make you bald" comments — is a game of telephone played on that one result. Notice what did not happen in the fifteen-plus years since: a line of human trials showing that creatine actually increases hair loss. It has not arrived. The proxy was measured once and then treated, culturally, as the outcome.
This is the first thing to separate. "Creatine raises DHT in some men, in one study" and "creatine makes your hair fall out" are different claims separated by a large inferential leap, and the second one was never directly tested.
When you gather the studies that connect creatine to hair-related endpoints, the picture is not what the thumbnails suggest. The evidence does not show that creatine supplementation causes hair loss in humans. The DHT finding has not been reproduced in a way that connects through to actual hair outcomes, and direct human evidence of hair loss is absent.
That is not the same as saying creatine is proven safe for your hair. It is saying the strongest version of the popular claim — "creatine causes hair loss" — outruns the evidence that exists to support it. The honest summary is: no clear effect, based on what has been studied so far.

A claim like this survives because it has the three properties that make health information spread.
It is biologically plausible. DHT is genuinely implicated in male pattern baldness, and creatine genuinely interacted with DHT in one study. Plausibility is not proof, but it is enough to make the claim feel true, which is all virality requires.
It is vivid and personal. Hair loss is high-stakes and visible. A supplement that works but costs you your hair is a perfect trade-off narrative — it has tension, stakes, and a thing you can do about it (stop taking it, or take this other thing). That structure travels.
And it has a real study to point at. The single 2009 paper gives the claim a veneer of citation. "Studies show" is the most powerful two words in health content, and the claim has a study to attach them to, even if the study does not say what people think it says.
Notice that none of those three properties are about whether the claim is correct. They are about why it propagates. That gap — between what spreads and what is true — is the entire reason this site exists.
Creatine and hair loss is one file, but the shape of it is everywhere. A single study, often measuring a proxy rather than the outcome people care about, gets amplified into a confident rule. The proxy-to-outcome leap goes unexamined. Replication never comes, and nobody notices its absence, because the original claim was already so useful.
Once you start reading health claims this way, you cannot stop. You start asking, every time: one study or many? Proxy or outcome? Reproduced or not? Four questions that collapse most of the supplement internet into noise.
The point of a file like this is not to make you trust us instead of the thumbnail. It is to make the path from claim to evidence something you can walk yourself.

Creatine does not appear to cause hair loss. That is what the research supports, and the confidence is appropriately modest. If new studies arrive that change that, the consensus page changes with them. That is the difference between a research tool and a content feed.
